Welcome to Alaska Friends of the Guard and Reserve

The Friends of the Guard and Reserve (FOGR) was established in 1997. Our mission is to assist the members, their families and employers of the Alaska Guard and Reserve for all seven services through their hardships while serving our country.

We are an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation. We are governed by a volunteer board of directors.

The Friends of the Guard and Reserve takes great pride in the heroic skills and loyalty of our Alaska citizen Troops. That is why we strive to support our Troops and their families as they make the difficult transition from civilian life to military life and then back to civilian life when their service is complete. Not only do our dedicated Troops have to deal with separation from loved ones that duty brings, but also the sometimes sudden and unexpected financial challenges. It's estimated that as many as one-third of families report a decrease in income as a result of a deployment. With record levels of Troops being called to duty from Alaska, many families have been left behind at home, unable to meet monthly expenses or pay for emergencies. And even more deployments are expected.

Our National Guard and Reserve willingly leave their civilian jobs and families to serve us and our nation. Thousands of Guard and Reserve from Alaska have been called to active duty. Unfortunately, the sudden change from a civilian income to a smaller military income often causes financial strain for our citizen Troops and their families.

The Friends of National Guard and Reserve is here to help ease this burden. We provide financial assistance to citizens of Alaska who are members of the National Guard and all other Reserve components and are suffering financial hardship due to activation or extended military commitment.

In addition, we work closely with the Alaska National Guard State Family Program Office as well as the Guard’s Operation Santa Claus. Both of these programs strive to provide the best service to National Guard and Reserve members as well as to the community that supports these Troops and their families. Please learn more about these organizations by exploring the programs they offer through the links on your left.
